Why Is My Hair So Frizzy? The Real Reasons and What Actually Helps

As a professional stylist, one of the first things I tell my clients is this: some frizz is just part of having textured hair. The goal is not to eliminate it entirely. The goal is to feel in control of it.

That said, a lot of frizz is not about your hair type at all. It is about your routine. And routine is something you can change.

What Is Actually Causing Your Frizz?

You are touching your hair while it dries. Leave your hair completely alone while it dries. The definition and memory for your curl or wave pattern forms as the hair dries. Once fully dry, break it up with flat hands. Never rake fingers through it.

You are brushing your hair after the shower. Brush in the shower instead, with conditioner still in, using a wide-tooth comb or shower brush. Rinse in the direction of your part, not backwards. Once you are out, leave your hair alone.

You are using a regular bath towel. The friction from a terry cloth towel breaks up your curl pattern and roughs up the cuticle. Switch to a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt. Squeeze out the moisture gently rather than rubbing.

You are over-washing. Washing your hair every day strips it of the natural oils that keep it smooth and nourished. Aim for one to two washes per week regardless of hair type.

Your hair is damaged. Frizz is often your hair signalling that it needs nourishment. Chemical treatments, heat styling, environmental damage, and split ends all contribute.

You are using the wrong products. Products that are too heavy coat the hair without nourishing it. If you have wavy or curly hair and frizz is a persistent problem, your products may simply not be right for your texture.

Other Things That Make Frizz Worse

  • Heat styling too often breaks down the cuticle layer. Try air drying more often.
  • Humidity causes the cuticle to swell and lift for all hair types, not just curly hair.
  • Touching your hair throughout the day separates strands and breaks up your pattern.

How to Actually Reduce Frizz

Stop over-washing. This is the single highest-impact change for most people. Shampooing once or twice a week instead of daily makes a visible difference fast.
