Why Does My Hair Get Greasy So Fast? 5 Real Reasons and Easy Fixes
Greasy hair can derail your whole day. You wash your hair, it looks great for a few hours, and then by lunchtime your roots are flat and oily again. Most people's instinct is to wash more often. That instinct is usually wrong.
I am a hair stylist with nearly 30 years of experience. Here are the five most common reasons your hair gets greasy fast, and what to actually do about each one.
What Is Greasy Hair?
A little grease is actually natural. You get greasy hair thanks to sebum, the natural oil your sebaceous glands produce. Your scalp needs it to stay healthy and moisturized. But too much oil leaves you with hair that looks slick, limp, and weighed down. Here is why yours might be overproducing.
Reason 1: Your Shampoo Is Too Heavy
Using a shampoo that is too moisturizing for your hair type adds oil on top of a scalp that is already producing its own. Switch to a lighter, gentler formula: clarifying, balancing, or volumizing.
Reason 2: You Are Applying Conditioner at Your Roots
Conditioner belongs on the ends of your hair only. Your scalp produces its own oils and does not need additional moisture. Apply conditioner where your ponytail sits and below.
Reason 3: You Are Using Heavy Leave-In Products at Your Roots
Leave-in conditioners and styling creams belong on the lengths and ends only. Applying them to your roots adds weight and oil to an area that cannot absorb it. Keep all leave-in products from mid-length to ends.
Reason 4: Exercise and Sweating
When you work out, your scalp produces extra moisture that mixes with your natural oils. Reaching for the shampoo after every session strips your scalp, which triggers it to produce even more oil. You end up in a cycle of washing more and getting greasier faster.

Reason 5: You Are Using Too Much Heavy Styling Product

Should I wash my hair every day to prevent grease? No. Daily washing strips natural moisture and triggers your scalp to produce more oil. One to two washes a week is the target.
Is greasy hair unhealthy? Not necessarily. It usually means something in your routine is off. Start with the fixes above before drawing any conclusions.
