Fine Curly Hair Care: The Dos and Don'ts That Actually Make a Difference

Fine curly hair is one of the most misunderstood hair types out there. What works for coarse curls will weigh yours down and make them stringy. What works for straight hair will turn yours into a frizzy mess. As a professional hairstylist, I see fine, curly hair making the same mistakes every day. Here is what actually works.

Understanding Fine, Curly Hair

Fine hair refers to the diameter of each individual strand, not how much hair you have. Fine strands are smaller than a sewing thread, delicate, and get limp or weighed down easily. Fine curly hair specifically is prone to getting weighed down, losing definition quickly, and getting oily faster than coarser textures. It is also more fragile, which means it needs a gentler approach.

What NOT to Do

Do not use heavy creams and conditioners. Thick conditioning creams, heavy leave-ins, and oil-rich masks will weigh your curls down and flatten out any definition within hours.

Do not deep condition too often. Once or twice a month is enough. More than that and your curls will look flat and stringy. Use a lightweight conditioner on your ends only.

Do not co-wash. Co-washing adds too much moisture and weight for fine curly hair. Stick to a gentle clarifying shampoo instead.

Do not touch your hair while it dries. Set your curls, then leave them alone completely until your hair is fully dry.

Do not brush after the shower. Detangle in the shower with conditioner in, using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Once you step out, leave your hair alone.

What to Do

Use lightweight products layered in the right order. For day two or after the gym, reach for Sweaty Hair Refresher. A lightweight foam made specifically for curly and wavy hair, it has deodorizing enzymes that neutralize sweat and odor, and amino acids that strengthen your strands and reduce frizz over time. Use it on dry or damp hair after training to restyle without washing.

For oily roots, Skip Day absorbs oil and adds volume without any white cast or residue. Spray at the roots, massage in, and dry with low heat or leave to air dry.

Diffuse for volume using a cup diffuser on a low heat setting. Wash once or twice a week. Apply products mid-length to ends only. Sleep pineapple style in a soft scrunchie.

Styling Tips From a Pro

  • Use a microfiber towel or t-shirt right out of the shower. Gently squeeze excess water.
  • Style your hair upside down or sideways for a natural lift.
  • Only apply styling products mid-length to ends. Never at the roots.
  • Use the praying hands method to apply product evenly.
  • Sleep with your hair gathered at the top of your head using a soft scrunchie.

Does Fine Curly Hair Need Layers?

Yes. A layered cut gives fine curly hair lift at the roots and removes weight from the ends, which lets your curls spring up properly. If your curls are falling flat, a haircut is often part of the fix.

The Short Version

Fine curly hair needs lightweight products, gentle handling, and a routine that does not over-moisturize. Get those three things right and your curls stop looking weighed down, your definition lasts longer, and your routine gets simpler.
